Pennsylvania man charged with DUI, other offences

A 44-year-old Pennsylvania man could be spending almost a decade in prison after being convicted of charges filed against him last year. The accused, a Venango County resident, was charged with resisting arrest, fleeing police and DUI. He entered guilty pleas in court recently as part of a plea bargain with the district attorney's office.

As part of that agreement, the district attorney won't prosecute the man for other charges brought against him, including aggravated assault, harassment and summary traffic counts. Police were initially called to check on a domestic dispute between the man and his spouse, allegedly taking place in a vehicle. The car left before police arrived, but was spotted by police just outside the city limits. Law enforcement had to use a pursuit intervention technique (PIT) to eventually stop the car.

The PIT technique has a police cruiser physically make contact with a fleeing vehicle, which causes the driver to lose control and come to a stop. The accused is free on a nonmonetary bond of $50,000. He could face seven years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines for fleeing police, an additional fine and two years in prison for resisting arrest and a further fine and six months in jail on the DUI charge, which also has a minimum three-day jail time and a fine should a conviction result.

Pennsylvania residents facing a DUI charge may benefit from the help of an experienced attorney who can fight the charges and/or explore the possibility of a favorable plea agreement with the prosecution. Having a legal team to mount an aggressive defense may be much better for those accused than going it alone. A lawyer knows the ins and outs of the law and and local court procedures, and how they might pertain to each individual client's case.
